Chinese Culture Week
Edinburgh, Scotland — On 9 August 2026, the 2026 Chinese Culture Week (CCW) officially opened at Edinburgh's historic Merchant's Hall, marking the start of a month-long celebration of Chinese arts, heritage and cross-cultural exchange at the world's largest arts festival.
The opening ceremony's centrepiece was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Intercultural Connections Initiative (ICI) and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society — the world's largest arts festival. This landmark agreement establishes a long-term, stable strategic partnership between the two organisations, creating a permanent framework for Sino-British cultural exchange and international artistic co-creation.
A New Chapter in Sino-British Cultural Relations
The MOU signing ceremony was witnessed by distinguished guests from across Edinburgh's civic, cultural, diplomatic and artistic communities, including:
- Robert Aldridge, Lord Provost of Edinburgh
- Zhang Biao (张飙), Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Edinburgh
- Tony Lankester, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society
- Wen Xin (温馨), President of the Intercultural Connections Initiative
In his address, Tony Lankester highlighted the Fringe's long-standing commitment to showcasing outstanding Chinese artistic works, noting that this strategic partnership will open smoother pathways for contemporary Chinese art, intangible cultural heritage, and original productions to reach international audiences, while fostering ongoing two-way artistic dialogue.
Wen Xin reflected on the four-year journey of collaboration between ICI and the Fringe Society, describing the MOU as a transition from "phase-based collaboration" to "strategic co-creation." She outlined plans for joint artistic projects, bilateral cultural promotion initiatives, and international artist support programmes — bringing Edinburgh's festival resources to China while continuing to champion Chinese cultural content in the UK.
Immersive Chinese Cultural Experience
Following the formal proceedings, guests were invited to explore a specially curated Chinese cultural space showcasing the breadth of Chinese tradition and contemporary innovation:
- Sichuan Bian Lian (Face-Changing) — a contemporary reimagining of this mesmerising intangible heritage art form
- Cross-cultural musical performances — blending Chinese and Western instruments and traditions
- Traditional Culture Market — hands-on experiences in calligraphy, tea ceremony, intangible heritage crafts, and Chinese board games
The evening also saw the premiere of the photographic exhibition "From Taishan to the World" (从台山出发), which explores the contemporary inheritance and innovative development of traditional culture, examining how Chinese cultural heritage finds new expression in the modern era.
A Month-Long Festival Programme
Running throughout August alongside the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, CCW 2026 presents a diverse programme of co-created productions spanning intangible heritage innovation, mythological reconstruction, science-fiction theatre, Chinese-style dance, and contemporary opera — all told through an international artistic language that brings Chinese stories to global audiences.
The festival also embraces its "cultural exchange, shared prosperity" ethos through community engagement. A charity raffle at the opening ceremony raised funds for Edinburgh's One City Trust, with Hainan Airlines generously sponsoring international round-trip flights as prizes. The evening concluded with all guests, artists, volunteers and partners joining together to sing "Auld Lang Syne" (友谊地久天长) — a fitting tribute to the enduring friendship between China and Scotland.
Looking Ahead
With the MOU as its new foundation, Chinese Culture Week enters a new era as an official cultural IP partner of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. ICI will continue to deepen Sino-British cross-cultural exchange, integrating high-quality artistic resources from both sides to build a sustainable, professional, and international platform for cultural communication — enabling more outstanding Chinese culture and emerging artistic voices to reach the world stage.
